I am interested in the theory and practice of Motherhood, and the often turbulent relationship between Mother and Daughter within the Black Familial structure.
Since giving birth to my own daughter in early 2020, I have been unpacking the lessons on Motherhood that were handed down from my own Mother, as well as the concept of Motherhood as a form of social construct.
In this explorative journey, I am seeking to understand if the notion of Motherhood is inherited, learned, imposed or absorbed. Do the paths and decisions of our Mothers' Mothers determine our own journeys through Motherhood? What impact do these societal labels have on self-definition as a Mother or Daughter?
HEREDITARY is an ongoing body of work that began in 2022 and uses photography, moving image, words and sound to explore this evolving narrative.
